Why Every Small Business Needs a Website

In this article, we cover why your business still needs an online presence and why a website benefits your customers and your business, even now in the presence of Social Media and Artificial intelligence (AI) giants. We also explain some of the issues with not having a website and how it may impact your business growth.

No Website? You’re Missing Out (And Your Competitors Know It)

Did you know that 81% of people research a business online before visiting or committing to engage with a small business?

A professional small business website is crucial for making an excellent first impression. Some of the most visited pages, according to Australia Post’s 2024 “Inside Australian Online Shopping – eCommerce Industry Report”, are some of the non-product-related pages about your business. These are pages like the about page, returns policy, and information that gives the consumer an idea of your business ethics and how the business operates, such as the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).

With the rise of social media, it can be confusing to understand why a website is still necessary for a small business owner instead of defaulting to a Facebook or Instagram page. It is not unusual for us to discuss this when we meet people in the community.

In 2025, it is essential to understand that online tools like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram are necessary for a complete strategy, but should not be considered mandatory for all businesses. There are exceptions! For example, a local plumbing business would not usually be a good fit on Instagram or TikTok, but a local fitness coach may be an excellent fit for these platforms, depending on their customer profiles.

Social Media platform Facts that people do not understand:

  • Ownership: Did you know that you do not own your business listing on most social platforms and are, therefore, subject to platform policy changes, which can affect your bottom line?
  • Intellectual Property (IP): In most cases, you surrender some, if not all, of your IP to the platform by sharing your content. For example, when you create a Facebook Business listing, you grant Meta a license to use the content you post on their platform. This is stated in their Terms of Service. This license allows them to display, distribute, and reproduce your content to operate and promote Facebook.
  • Digital platform disputes are rising: The number of cases involving small businesses experiencing issues with digital platforms, including social media account shutdowns, has more than doubled since July 2022. (Source: ASBFEO)
  • Meta platforms dominate complaints: Two-thirds of these disputes relate to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. 75% of those disputes involved difficulties accessing accounts, often due to hacking or unexplained shutdowns. (Source: ASBFEO)

For some of these reasons, we encourage business owners to seriously consider the importance of their website in their online presence and digital marketing strategy. Additionally, in the changing digital landscape, with evolving customer expectations, your website is in your complete control and not subject to the whim of a commercial giant.

24/7 Accessibility: Open for Business, Even When You’re Not

Your business website can take on many forms and grow as your business needs grow. From a simple landing page to an eCommerce giant. Your site is a 24/7 resource when you are offline and critical to customer engagement.

We would typically suggest you use your site as a helpful resource to potential clients, giving them access to your basic information, such as your Name, Address, and Phone Number, your opening hours, and links to other specific sources of information like your business reviews and social pages if they are the right fit.

Websites Build Credibility and Trust: Your Online Storefront

Some of the most successful businesses develop trust with their clients right from the start. This means focusing on providing value, demonstrating legitimacy, and building a brand image from the first impression, trusting that ultimately, this will pay off.

Your website is the ultimate way to do this, as it is the only online asset you and your business are in total control of.

Expand Your Reach: Beyond Your Local Market

You can easily target customers in your desired geographic areas with the right strategy. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) allows your business to be found by customers in your desired markets. Think of SEO as expanding your market geographically or focusing on a more refined local market.

Expanding Your Local Marketing Reach

Web presence allows for a refined client base. As a small local business owner, you may find yourself battling traffic as you drive across suburbs to meet clients all over your surrounding area. Few realise there is an opportunity to operate more efficiently by working with more clients closer to your base. This is the power of well-executed local SEO.

Refining Your Reach to Maximise Return

Conversely, if your business is expanding, having optimised your local client base, perhaps it is time to add new geographic target areas to your reach. Your business website can be used to align with your changing focus. We find that after a client has reached local SEO success, it is entirely possible to change course and expand the business focus through targeted ongoing SEO.

Control Your Narrative: Showcase Your Unique Value Proposition

Your unique selling proposition (USP) makes you and your business unique, it’s your narrative. Your website allows you to control your business narrative without the confines of social platforms. You must be in control of this narrative, as this will enable you to showcase your value to potential clients.

Your website is the only place you are in full control because it is completely owned by your business.

Level the Playing Field: Compete with the Big Guys

The irony is that your website places you on the same playing field as the big guys in the industry. Whilst you may be competing for clients, you do not have to play in the same game. A well-designed website places your business’s unique selling proposition in the niche you carve out, allowing you to play in the same field as others in your industry but beating them by playing a different game.

A website is a cost-effective way of getting into the market.

Having established your digital presence online, it can take a while for the results to start showing. This can often be a 12 to 24-month journey. It is vital to stick to your strategy, with regular checks and actions if necessary.

When considering your website’s build and ongoing SEO, ensure that you align with your business strategy. There would be no point in your new website going in totally the opposite direction from where you would like your business to grow.

Reviewing website performance is easy with the available analytics tools. These tools show how your site is performing in the market and how your customers are responding.
